What is saaS development?

SaaS development is building software that many customers sign up to and pay for on a subscription. Beyond the features, it needs accounts and teams, billing, onboarding, permissions, an admin side, and hosting that copes as customers arrive. We build all of that, and we run our own SaaS product, DeskZap, so we know where the hard parts are.

01.03.1

Who is it for?

  • Founders turning an idea or a service into a product
  • Businesses productising an internal tool to sell to others
  • SaaS teams who need extra senior hands on a roadmap

01.03.2

From a small business to a large organisation

The same team takes on a single tool for a small business and long-running work for large companies and the public sector. Here is what each end looks like.

For a small business

A first paid version of your product with sign-up, billing and an admin area, and nothing it does not need yet.

For large companies and the public sector

Multi-tenant platforms with single sign-on, organisation accounts, data separation, audit logs and the uptime larger customers expect.

  • Multi-tenant architecture
  • SSO and SCIM for enterprise customers
  • Re-platforming an existing product
  • Scaling and cost reviews

Questions

Have you built a SaaS product yourselves?

Yes. DeskZap, our remote access and remote support product, is built and run by Hot Rocket Software. It has plans, trials, billing and a self-hosted option, so the operational side of SaaS is familiar ground.

Single-tenant or multi-tenant?

Most SaaS products start multi-tenant with strict tenant isolation in the database. Single-tenant deployments make sense for customers with strong data residency or security requirements, and we can design for both.

Can you work with our existing codebase?

Yes. We usually start with a short code audit so you know what we found before we change anything.
